Yasukuni Shrine, Dedication of Tamiya-ryu Iaijutsu
Tamiya-ryu Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial art with a history of more than 400 years.
It is known for its emphasis on graceful movements, dignity, discipline, and the unity of mind, body, and sword.
Tamiya-ryu is sometimes described as “the school of beauty” or “the school of dignity.” The practice is not simply about learning how to draw or use a sword. Every movement—from sitting and standing to drawing the sword, cutting, sheathing, and bowing—is performed with precision and purpose.
One of the fundamental principles of Iaido is that the real contest begins before the sword is drawn. This is expressed in the traditional concept of “the victory is within the scabbard.” The practitioner learns to remain calm, control the situation, and respond appropriately without unnecessary aggression.
Through repeated practice of traditional forms, practitioners develop not only swordsmanship, but also concentration, self-control, respect, patience, and inner discipline.
The goal is therefore not simply to become skilled with a sword. It is to cultivate the mind, body, and spirit and to express the values of traditional Japanese martial culture through every movement.
