What makes Kyoto’s maiko culture distinctive is that it is not simply a form of traditional entertainment. It is a highly refined cultural tradition in which performing arts, hospitality, seasonal aesthetics, dress, and apprenticeship have been passed down within the unique social structure of the hanamachi, or geisha districts. The seasons are reflected in their dance, kimono, hair ornaments, cuisine, and decorations. This is closely connected to Kyoto’s traditional appreciation of nature and seasonal beauty. Kimono, obi, hair ornaments, hairstyles, and makeup are not simply fashion. They can reflect the season, age, and experience of the maiko.
