Common questions.

It is a national qualification administered by the Japan Tourism Agency. Candidates sit written exams in a foreign language, in Japanese history, geography, and general culture, then an oral interview. Fewer than one in ten candidates pass. Since Japan changed the law in 2018, anyone may be paid to guide visitors, licensed or not — which is why the credential is worth asking about. Every OMAKASE tour is led by a licence holder.

Yes. You are never grouped with strangers. The guide is with your party only, so the pace, the route and the lunch stop are all yours to change on the day.

For our most popular 6-hour private tour, the fee for a licensed professional guide is approximately ¥60,000 per group. The final rate may vary depending on the size of the group and the season. In addition to the guide fee, admission fees, transportation, meals, and any applicable expenses for the guide are charged separately. To ensure complete transparency, we provide a detailed quotation in advance, clearly itemizing each expense. This allows you to see exactly what is included in the guide service and what is allocated to transportation, admission fees, and other arrangements. Our aim is to provide a seamless, personalized experience in Japan, with every detail thoughtfully arranged in advance.

Yes. Nara, Osaka, Himeji, Nikko, Kamakura, the Nakasendo post towns, Mt. Fuji, Nagano, Kanazawa and Nagoya are all regular ground for us. Multi-day itineraries across several cities are the thing we most enjoy building.

Japan’s historic streets and cultural sites can vary considerably in accessibility. Some famous temples and gardens involve long flights of steps, while others offer step-free access and more comfortable routes.

With a private, thoughtfully planned journey, we can take these considerations into account from the very beginning and design the day around your needs and pace. The earlier we know, the more carefully we can select suitable routes, entrances, transport, and places to visit.

Our aim is simple: for everyone in your party to feel comfortable, relaxed, and able to enjoy the journey.

Two to three months is comfortable. Cherry blossom season, the autumn colours and New Year fill up earlier. If you are already in Japan and something fell through, write anyway — we sometimes have a day free.

The plan changes and you still have a good day. That is most of what you are paying a private guide for.
